Happy 4th of July!

Here's some tips to keep your pet safe for the holiday weekend! The Fourth of July holiday is the official start to the summer. Whether you celebrate by lounging on the beach, having friends over for a cookout or taking in a parade and fireworks display you will want to keep your companion animals safe by following these handy tips.

Fireworks: Celebrating the stars and stripes by a fireworks display is one of the great American traditions. However, your animals may not feel the same. Make note of Fourth of July celebrations and if there will be fireworks in your area. If there is no “official” display in your town please keep in mind that many of your neighbors may be having private firework shows. Be sure to have your animals in a safe indoor location during the Fourth of July weekend. If your dog is extremely afraid of fireworks you may want to talk to your veterinarian about a mild sedative.

Hitting the beach: Many beaches are off limits to dogs in the summer. Please be a responsible dog owner and seek out parks and beaches that allow dogs. Check out this website for some dog friendly locations: www.dogfriendly.com

Sail Away: Personal Flotation Devices (life vests) are just as important for dogs as they are for people. So if you plan on having your dog as your first mate you will want to make sure they are wearing the appropriate gear.

Crowds: We all love having our canine companions by our side as they are a part of our lives. Make note of your dog’s comfort and tolerance level. When heading out to a parade or park that you know will be overcrowded you may want to keep your pooch at home. The combination of the crowd and the heat may make it a not so fun adventure for your dog.

ID is Key: The Fourth of July weekend is a time that many a dog and cat get lost. Please make sure you have a collar and tag on your pets at all times. For cats make sure you have a kitty safe break away collar.
